This Attacking Basics Guide will show you couples of basic attack strategies guide for each Town Hall level. If you have any questions or great ideas, feel free to do a comment! Let’s do this guide more and more better!
This guide is from FlyAutumn on Clash of Clans forum. I have decided to post it here with his permission cause I found it useful. Perfect guide for newbies!
Before upgrading your Town Hall and doing attack, you should read the guide Things should do after upgrading Town Hallfirst.

Town Hall 2 and 3

attacking-basic-townhall-level-2-3
Army composition:
60% of barbarians and 40% of archers is the best army composition in these levels ’cause they are cheap army to produce, so you can have elixir for upgrades.
Attacking:
  1. First Wave: Deploy a half of your barbarians next to the Mortar. You need to take it down first because it can do most damage in the war.
  2. Second Wave: After destroying the mortar, you need to take the Archer Tower down by deploying the rest of the barbarians. Archers will do the final jobs.
General Overall Strategy:
  1. Attack any exposed defenses.
  2. Mortars cannot attack the enemies while they are stand next to them (in the red circle). So you can use barbarians to do this job, ’cause they has a short attack range. They go into the red circle, while archers don’t.
  3. Use archers to destroy all other defenses inside the Walls.

Town Hall 4

There are two options of army composition for this level of Town Hall (80 housing places for example):
  • 31 Barbarians, 20 Archers, 5 Giants and 2 Wall Breakers.
  • 60% Barbarians and Archer is the rest.
I recommend using the second option if you are new TH4 and have not upgraded your camps yet.
Attacking:
attacking-basic-townhall-level-4
Using Giants and Wall BreakersThe difference between attacking as a TH 4 versus a TH 2 or 3 is that you have more housing space. This means… giants and wall breakers! Now, you might be wondering: why shouldn’t I use giants and wall breakers as a TH 3? Well, you do UNLOCK them at TH 3, but that doesn’t mean you should use them. A good army usually has a good amount of barbarians and archers to form the second and third waves of attack, and if you use the giants then, you have to sacrifice the number of barbarians and archer that you use.
How to Deploy Giants and Wall Breakers (First Wave)I recommend using giants and wall breakers as part of your first wave. Giants specifically target defenses, and you should deploy them near a mortar if it is near the outside of the base. But wait! What if the mortar is enclosed by walls? Then what? Well, that’s where the wall breakers come in. The process:
  • Deploy giants near mortar [black dot], or whatever defense you chose.
  • Once the giants start attacking the walls, deploy one wall breaker. If the wall breaker doesn’t break through the wall or gets killed, deploy the other wall breaker. (This is why you have two).

WHY?

The giants serve as a “shield” for the wall breakers. Since the defenses will target the closest troop, your giants will take the fire (it’s okay, they have high hit points).

Deploying Barbarians and Archers (Second and Third Waves)
Now that the mortar and/or some other defenses have been (hopefully) taken care of, you can deploy your archers and barbarians.
  • First, check to see if there are any buildings in the corners. If there are, deploy one barbarian to each of them.
  • Deploy the rest of your barbarians in an arc around any buildings that aren’t enclosed by walls [blue arc and blue dots]. Follow up with archers if there are A LOT of buildings (over 50% of the base).
  • If you HAVE taken out the mortar, deploy your archers in CLUSTERS near the other defenses [red dot]. Archers can shot over the walls, and cannons and archer towers can only target one troop at a time.
  • If you HAVEN’T taken out the mortar, deploy your archer in a LINE in front of the defenses. Since mortars deal splash damage, which is damage to all the troops in one area, a line of archers with make it so it takes longer for your troops to be wiped out.

Clan Castle Troops: How To Deal With Them
So how about them clan castle troops?
Sometimes when you’re attacking, you come across troops in the clan castle that defend your enemy’s village. The troops often come out and wreak havoc on your army – oh no! Here’s how to combat that:

Option 1:
  1. Set one troop down (barbarians work well) by the clan castle. If there are troops in the clan castle, they will come out and attack your barbarian. (If there aren’t any, proceed with your normal attack plan.)
  2. Next, lure the clan troops away from the base by deploying barbarians farther away from the base.
  3. Once all the clan castle troops are out of the range of the defenses, surround them with barbarians.
NOTE: if there are air troops, for example, balloons, you will need to deploy archers instead of barbarians.
Option 2:
  1. If you are TH 5 or above, you have another choice.
  2. The first step is the same: use a barbarian to figure out if there are troops inside the clan castle.
  3. Then, drop a lightning spell (unlocked with level 1 spell factory) on the clan castle troops. This should take out most, if not all of them. If any troops remain, use barbarians to take care of them.

Town Hall 5

Assumes that you have 135 housing spaces:
  • Option 1: 60% Barbarians and 40% Archers.
  • Option 2: 40 Archers, 54 Barbarians, 7 Giants and 3 Wall Breakers.
If you are trying to get loot or trophies, I recommend using option one. If you are attacking in a clan war, or aren’t going for loot or trophies, I recommend using option two.
attacking-basic-townhall-level-5
Attacking:
  1. First Wave: Deploy your giants, then wall breakers as close to the mortar as you can get [black dot]. Since wall breakers will attack the nearest enclosed wall [shown by black arrows], make sure that you don’t deploy all of them at the same time.
  2. Second Wave: Deploy your archers along the elixir collectors and army camps [blue arcs]. Back up your archer attack with about seven barbarians to each side.
  3. Third Wave: Split your remaining barbarians between the clan castle and army barracks and the gold mines [red dots].
Additional strategies and notes:
  1. Attacking enclosed defenses (i.e. mortars, archer towers, cannons, etc.)
  2. If it is on the first layer of the base (by this I mean that it is on the outside, but enclosed by walls), use the giant / wall breaker deployment strategy outlined in the TH 4 section.
  3. If it is on the second+ layer of the base, you have two options.
  4. Use the giant and wall breaker strategy
  5. Use a lightning spell first (this can damage a mortar to 1/2 or 3/4 of its hit points), then follow up with your giants and wall breakers.
Spells:
At TH 5, you unlock the lightning spell. My thoughts on it:
I’m not really a huge fan, unless it involves zapping clan castle troops because It cost a bit of elixir, and it doesn’t really do enough damage to be “worth it” for me.
I do know that some people really like to use lightning spells, especially at lower levels. If you use them, I recommend saving them for clan wars. They help to give that little bit of extra damage you need to get more stars on an attack.

Town Hall 6

Assumes that you have 150 housing spaces:
  • Option 1: 40% archers and 50% barbarians.
  • Option 2: 1 Healer, 3 Wall Breakers, 40 Archers, 50 Barbarians and 8 Giants.Optional: 2 Healing Spells.
Healing Spell is optional but I strong recommend you to use it whenever you attack find a well-loot village. The second option is better in Clan Wars. I always use the option 1 in normal raiding because it costs not much elixir for training troops.
attacking-basic-townhall-level-6
Attacking:
  1. Deploy 1-3 barbarians to set off suspected traps and bombs. Deploy one barbarian for each builder if they are in the corners and deploy 10 archers by the exposed archer tower.
  2. Deploy 2 Giants at the blue dot, which is the nearest to the mortar then deplay 1-2 Wall Breakers to destroy the walls. Once the wall has been downed, deploy two more Giants. You can use the Healing Spell now for your Giants.
  3. Deploy 10 archers along each blue line. Deploy 10 archers near the Air Defense (black dot) then deploy your Healer once the Air Defense has been destroyed. Deploy 4 more Giants for the remaining red dot Mortar and use Wall Breakers for breaking the walls.
  4. Deploy half of your barbarians along each green line.

This smart strategy is from DanIsHere on Clash of Clans Reddit sub. I’ve found that it’s awesome and decided to post it here for all you guys. I always save my King and Queen for the last attack once all my army has died. But after reading this guide, I’ve had new strategy to play!
So the failure began when…
mass-dragon-attack-with-barbarian-king-strategy-1As you can see, I did two mistakes are poorly deploying dragons and deploying theBarbarian King just for a little benefit.
mass-dragon-attack-with-barbarian-king-strategy-2
One dragon is not the end of the world, but three dragons doing laps is the major problem. Two dragons for Town Hall is not enough! After this raid, I just had one-star. And It could be three-star if I had put three dragons on the Town Hall. But I want three-star. I know that we all have had this happen, and I have a new plan!

Mass Dragon Attack with Barbarian King Plan

mass-dragon-attack-with-barbarian-king-strategy-3
As you can see in the above screenshot, this was my mass drag attack plan. Deploy the first waves to destroy all the collectors and deploys the rest for the last jobs. Perfect plan, it would be three-star raid!
But I had miss-clicked and deployed my dragons too close to the gold mine:
mass-dragon-attack-with-barbarian-king-strategy-4
Next, I placed the Barbarian King far from the path of the dragons, far enough so that he could destroy the building before the dragons came and got it:

After this step, my dragons turned back to inside the base. These are the two dragons that were redirected and protected the main body of dragons from the clan castle balloons:

Depending on how you prioritized during earlier levels, you should have either two or three builders as you go into Town Hall 5. If you’re a player that only has two builders, make sure to get the 450 gem achievement for obtaining 1250 trophies and make this one of your main priorities. If you want to level your base quickly and efficiently, you must get a third builder. An easy way to obtain more trophies is to keep attacking and skipping bases bases until you see one that has their Town Hall placed in the corner. When you find these Town Halls, simply kill (by sniping) these Town Halls repeatedly until you get 1250 trophies. Afterwards, you can lower your trophy count to about 700-1000 for Town Hall 5.
In order to accommodate everyone, we will assume that you only have two builders at this point. However, if you are a player who already has three builders, keep your third builder busy by having him work on the items listed at the bottom of this article while your other two builders begin constructing important units and structures.

PRIORITIZING UPGRADES AND STRUCTURES IN TOWN HALL 5

At the start of Town Hall 5, the following buildings should be your main focus. Once you have completed these unit upgrades, start working on the secondary objectives listed in the lower portion of this guide.

BUILDER NO.1: LABORATORY – SPELL FACTORY

Start by having your first builder upgrade the Laboratory as soon as Town Hall 5 is finished. Since the Laboratory upgrades provide the largest increase in strength and durability at this level, it’s imperative that you start working on this immediately. Begin by completing research for Barbarian level 3 first and then Archer level 3. Having these upgrades will make a tremendous difference in the efficiency of your farming.
When your builder has completed the Laboratory, have him start on the Spell Factory. Even though the Lightning Spell isn’t the most powerful, you can still utilize it to wipe out Clan Castle units if you’re ever in a pinch.

BUILDER NO.2: NEW WALLS – NEW ARMY CAMP – ARMY CAMP UPGRADES

Have your second builder focus all remaining gold into fortifying your walls and then Army Camp upgrades. When you start on your new Army Camp, make sure that your builder stays on it until the stats of that camp are maxed out. Following this, have that builder upgrade your other two Army Camps all the way as well. By doing so, your army count should come out to a total of 135 (a drastic difference compared to Town Hall 4 players).

TOWN HALL 5 SECONDARY TASKS

Once your two builders have finished their primary tasks, begin working on the following objectives. (This section also applies to those with a third builder)

1ST TASK: BUILD NEW TOWERS AND REARRANGE A NEW BASE LAYOUT

When you reach Town Hall 5, go ahead and build a new Cannon, Archer Tower, and Wizard tower in that order. Once you’ve constructed the final Wizard Tower, reposition the units in your base.

2ND TASK: UPGRADE YOUR BARRACKS

The most efficient method of doing this is by taking only one of your builders and having him upgrade your Barracks to the highest level attainable. Be sure to only utilize one builder for your Barracks, otherwise you’ll have a hard time farming.

3RD TASK: UPGRADE YOUR TOWERS

While upgrades are being performed on your Barracks, use your remaining builders to improve your defensive towers. However, start with the newest towers first. Upgrading the Cannon and Archer tower is fairly quick and will provide you with the biggest increase in strength. Make sure to upgrade your defensive towers all the way before you start on Town Hall 6.

4TH TASK: UPGRADE ALL OTHER STRUCTURES

If you haven’t done so, go ahead and upgrade the rest of your buildings and structures (including your resource buildings). Once you’ve completed this, go ahead and begin working towards Town Hall 6. If you find yourself having free builders during this time, have them working on upgrading your Gold Mines and Elixir Collectors (don’t worry about maxing out the stats though).

The Things to do section is a guide for Town Hall level four. Follow
these guidelines below to help you in Clash of Clans.

Rebuild your Clan Castle

ClanCastle1
This is the rebuilt and repaired Clan Castle.
This is a great time to rebuild your Clan Castle. Not only will you be able to start your own Clan or join an existing one, it will allow you to request for Troops when you are in a Clan. Also, you gain access to participate in Clan Wars, where you can gain War Loot (Gold, Elixir, and Dark Elixir) from winning a Clan War!
Pretty exciting, isn't it? The requirements are having at least 10,000 Gold in your Gold Storages and a free Builder to rebuild your Clan Castle. Fortunately, rebuilding the Clan Castle is instantaneous.

Castle-0 resize
The ruined, useless, unmovable, and functionless Clan Castle.
How do you do this? First, click the damaged Clan Castle that looks like the right. Next, click "Info". Third, click the 10,000 Gold button. Now you have rebuilt the Clan Castle!
Right now, I know you want to test out the donation feature of the Clan Castle, so join a clan named "CCFill" or "Req 'n Run" (make sure that there is many players in the Clan), tap request, change the message to "I need Dark Elixir troops", and you will quickly be donated a lot of troops. Hopefully, the troops that are donated to you are Dark Elixir troops (Minions, Hog Riders, Valkyries, Golems, and Witches) that you won't be able to access normally until Town Hall level seven. Getting Town Hall level seven is a long time from now, so be thankful if you get any Dark Elixir Troops and say thanks to them quickly. After your Clan Castle request disappears or your Clan Castle shows "Full!" above the building, leave the clan quickly, else you may be kicked and banned from joining it later.
Now, think of being the leader of a successful clan! Unfortunately, most people will not join a new clan that has only one low leveled player in it (I know, levels are of no value and should not be used to determining if a player is good).
Instead, join an already existing clan that accepts players with low Trophy count (an example is "Freettle"). Make sure it says in the rules that "no swearing is allowed" or "Family clan" (so you don't get offended by the clan's Clan Chat). If the clan is a "feeder" clan to another clan, that means it is a sub clan that accepts lower players than the requirements of the main clan.
Now that you are in a clan, you want to know about Clan Wars. To read about that, click here for my complete guide on Clan Wars.
By the way, you cannot store Dark Elixir War Loot until you build the actual Dark Elixir Storage. Also, War Loot cannot be stolen directly from your Clan Castle.

Upgrade your Gold Mines and Elixir Collectors

Now is a great time to start upgrading your Gold Mines and Elixir Collectors. You will experience a sudden, major spike in how much resources is required to build and upgrade Buildings very soon.
Here is something I think you will like: When you upgrade a Gold Mine or Elixir Collector to level five, the visual appearance changes significantly.
Of course, the appearance is not the only thing that changes. The Gold Mine and Elixir Collector's resources per hour increases by three-hundred after level five. The real difference is that the internal resource storage increases significantly more than the resource generation, allowing you to build up a backlog of Gold and Elixir in the collectors which will take much longer to fill completely than in lower levels. The Gold Mines and an Elixir Collectors will take longer to have a production jam until you collect from them. (This is good because you can be offline for longer and still be producing resources.)
First, build your missing Gold Mine and Elixir Collector that you just gained the ability to build, and upgrade them to level eight (so the resource catch-up is reached earlier, allowing more production in the long run than if you only upgraded them to level seven or less). Second, upgrade the remaining ones to level seven or eight as well to the other Resource Buildings.

Build the Laboratory and other Army upgrades

Now that you are able to generate enough Elixir, you should build the Laboratory. This will allow you to upgrade Troops permanently using Elixir. The upgrades take a while to complete, and when they are done, the upgraded troop type is upgraded to the next level, permanently increasing hit-points, damage, and Elixir cost for all future and current troops of that type created by you. The level of upgraded troops are shown by the purple stars on the icons.
Due to the Town Hall upgrade, you are now able to upgrade the Army Camps again. Upgrade them to the max level for your Town Hall level to make the largest army possible.

Upgrade your defensive buildings

You should now focus on upgrading your Defensive Buildings.
Do the upgrades in this order:
  • Mortars to level two
  • Archer Towers to level four
  • Cannons to level five

Upgrade your walls

Now that you upgraded your buildings, now upgrade your Walls. Build all 25 new wall segments and upgrade all of your Walls to level three.

COC Town Hall (TH) Level 4 Guide

The Things to do section is a guide for Town Hall level four. Follow
these guidelines below to help you in Clash of Clans.

Rebuild your Clan Castle
